Callaghan The Best Ever?
5/12/2001
Was Dave Callaghan the best professional the club has ever had?
When you look at the list of names of the players that have turned out for the club, he's certainly in some pretty good company and to be the best ever pro would certainly be quite an achievement.
There's more to being a "good pro" than just turning up and performing on the field, although that is what the club pays for. Developing junior and senior players through coaching and in match play helps the club get the results it needs to be title contenders. Eldine Baptiste delivered the title for the club in 1996, for only the second time in the clubs Northern League history. Callas came close to repeating that goal in 1999 when the weather settled the title in favour of Darwen in the very last match of the season. Callaghan came top in the bowling averages in his first two seasons and finished close to the top of the batting averages as well. Baptiste was top of the bowling averages in the championship winning season.
The game has changed much in recent years but Rohan Kanhai was a prolific run scorer for the club in the early 1980s and is still the last batsman to score over a thousand runs in a season for the club.
