Match Report
The fourths, with six players under the age of fifteeen took their wins for the season to five, with a well deserved victory over Baxi at Warton.
On a hot day, St Annes fielded magnificently. The bowlers performed consistently well to subdue Baxi and pressure told as wickets fell steadily. Ian Howe took 2-37 in a marathon spell of fifteen overs, whilst 14 year old Nathan Armstrong was impressive in both his spells, finishing with 2-15. Graham Walters (2-16) and Mick Auty (2-7) chipped in whilst Ashley Ward's leg spin caused problems and deserved more reward.
As well as the bowlers performed, the ground fielding was equally notable. Luke Wilks did a good job behind the stumps and two 'side-on' direct hits from Jack Todd and Graham Walters set the tone as Baxi were bowled out for under a ton.
With the batting line up all but decimated by absentees and call ups to the thirds, the 97 run target looked challenging and big contributions from the openers would be needed if St Annes were to have any chance of winning. A mixture of patient defence and punishing shots saw Nigel Bernstein (43) and Adrian Speakman (30) all but sealed the win as they shared an opening stand of 86. After they were out, the innings wobbled, but a six wicket win was duly secured.
