Match Report

Again, unavailabilities meant that the 2nd X1 turned up at Preston with a very inexperienced team. 14 year old Matt Grindley making his debut. St Annes were asked to take the field. Rick Thomas proved the pick of the bowlers taking 4 for 18 in his 18 overs. The improving Greg Whitehead also bowled very well again. Some good fielding produced 3 run outs. Direct hits from brothers Adam and Andy Taylor produced 2 of these run outs. Preston were bowled out for 107. A good effort by St Annes. In reply St Annes had a poor start losing early wickets and ended up at 55 for 7. St Annes had some bad luck, Adam Taylor was unulucky to be bowled off all parts of his body and Gareth Costin can also count himself as been unlucky. The track wasn't easy to bat on and Preson bowled very well. Having said all that St Annes also played some poor shots and there is no excuse for being 55 for 7 against the divisions bottom side. Then came the recovery. Greg Whitehead made a superb 28, batting with skill and courage, Greg batted very well. Dave Hartley also produced his best innings for some time palying some fine shots. Rick Thomas and Andy Taylor at the end also batted well. If only the top order could have done slightly better. With a few overs to go Andy 'the train driver' Taylor was facing the last ball of an over, with 2 to tie Andy went for a drive, he edged the ball and was caught at third man. This meant a 15 point win for Preston. Well done to Preston they played a fine game. However the 2nd X1 are struggling in 11th place in the league and having their worst season for a very long time. A win is much needed against Carnforth next saturday.
