Match Report
St Annes 2nds first game of the season got off to a very strange start. Halfway through the captains pre match team talk which was going very well, Musy (it could have only been him or Hartley!) had a Sausage butty delivered to him on the pitch! Very professional I think not!. Barrow must have been quirking in their boots at the sight of Andy the tea man walking on to the pitch with Sausage butty and Brown sauce in hand! It's going to be another long season!
St Annes won the toss and decided to field. The wicket was slow but true and with a short and fast boundary Barrow must have been very disappointed to be 30 odd for 6 after the first hours play. Rick Thomas bowled very well early on taking 4 of the first 6 wickets. The fielding was good too with a particular good catch by Adam Taylor being the highlight. Barrow's late order then made a fine recovery. St Annes bowled OK but there were too many bad balls which gave Barrow the opportunity to get back in the game. Barrow finished with a respectable 164. Rick Thomas was the pick of the bowlers with 5 wickets.
St Annes made a good start helped by some loose bowling and over the top comments from fielders which seemed to make the St Annes batting more determined. After being in an excellent position at 75 for 0, St Annes then after some poor shots found themselves in trouble at 99 for 5. However a fine partnership from the injury prone Sean Bickerdike and debutant Gareth Costin (the new Boothy) saw St Annes home with plenty of overs to spare.
It was an encouraging start for the second team. One thing that was not good on saturday however was that 2 of the second team admitted to owning Hair Straightners!. I don't know what the world is coming to!. I'll mention no names but 1 comes from Carlisle and the other one's nickname is Psyco!
