Match Report
On a dreay day on a ground with no atmosphere it was hard to raise the enthusiasm. However after a disapointing result on Saturday it was very important that St Annes put in an improved performance.
St Annes won the toss and asked Kendal to bat. Kendal lost 4 overs through rain and amassed 161 in their 46 overs. This was a good effort by St Annes, all bowlers bowled pretty well. Greg Whitehead opened the bowling for St Annes in only his third game for the second team. He bowled very well, his first 5 overs went for only 11 and he had experienced ex 1st teamer Andrew Dugdale in trouble early on. Well done Greg. 2 incidents in the first innings stood out and both involved new boy Gareth Costin. Gareth was bowling when Dave Hartley took 1 of the best catches you will ever see. Diving, one handed right on the edge of the boundary. An excellent catch.
The other incident happened when Gareth was trying to throw back a ball after he chased it to the boundary. In trying to return the ball Gareth somehow threw the ball for 4!. I don't how Gareth did it, even though it cost us 2 runs it was very funny. Never mind Gareth.
Unfortunately after 1 over of the St Annes reply it rained and this cost St Annes 11 overs. The rules say that even though you lose overs, the target you are chasing doesn't reduce. This hardly seems fair. However St Annes then had 35 overs to chase 162. After a good start St Annes lost 4 quick wickets. Even though Dave Bartholomew and Gareth Costin had a good partnership in the middle St Annes couldn't recover and had to settle for a losing draw. A disapointing result but a valant effort in the circumstances and a much better performance than Saturday.
