Match Report

St. Annes lost the toss and were asked to field first. Andy Taylor and Ian Howe bowled a tight line and restricted the Thornton Cleveleys openers in the first 20 overs to just 45 runs. But with no wickets down the opposition were always in a position to accelerate and when one of the openers retired hurt after pulling a muscle going for a quick single the runs started to flow.

Kevin and his farther Keith Owers, an ex St. Annes player, did most of the damage with 31 and 57 respectively and although Howe bowled well over a long spell on a hot day, in the later part of the Thornton Cleveleys innings hay was made. St. Annes were a bowler or two short.

In reply St. Annes struggled to produce a serious assault on the target of 170 against a bowling attack of experience and youth. Experience in the form of D. Sidebottom who bowled 15 overs on the trot for 30 runs and tight swing bowling from youngsters D. Liggins and J. Bass who bowled in 5 over spells and went for only 48 off their combined 20 overs.

In the end Tim Bernstein on 48 was unable to increase the momentum and perished to a puzzling one handed attempted drive. Adrian Speakman supported with 25 before being bowled and young Luke Wilks was again committed in the field and showed he has a good batting technique.
