Match Report

St. Annes batted first in steamy conditions against a controlled bowling attack. Tim Bernstein and Simon Owen put on an opening stand of 58 before Owen went caught off a top edged pull. Bernstein followed shortly after, out stumped when a further 10 runs had been added to the score. Nick McKenzie, coming in up the order, batted through the rest of the innings for 27 not out. Two wickets fell with the score on 76 with the loss of Adrian Speakman, out bowled and Mick Auty hitting a ball back to the bowler and spontaneously calling for a suicidal run. Stewart Aris was also run out later in the innings from a good bit of fielding and a direct hit. However, against tight bowling and perhaps, with hindsight, not enough urgency in the batting, the total of 118 off 45 overs was insufficient.

In reply St. Annes were unable to cut off the all to regular boundaries and had used six bowlers to try and achieve a breakthrough before Andy Taylor took the first wicket bowled off the third ball of his come back over. By then Penwortham had an opening partnership of 100 runs.

Luke Wilks bowled three tidy overs before Graham Tindall claimed the second wicket. However by that stage it was all but over and St. Annes were beaten by a side that showed more purpose in its batting and more discipline in its bowling.
