Match Report
TWENTY20 DEFEAT
Fleetwood 120-6
St Annes 88-8
Gerry Wolstenholme
In the now customary Twenty20 conditions, stygian gloom and rain or at least pending rain, St Annes lost their first completed game of the competition at Broadwater on Thursday evening. The conditions meant a reduced game so in effect it was Fifteen15 cricket and after Fleetwood had made 120-6 from their allocation St Annes failed miserably to maintain a satisfactory scoring rate and totalled only 88-8 to lose by 32 runs.
They started reasonably well with Joe Davies removing potential matchwinner John Whalley for two when David Hartley took a catch. Peter Jackson bowled well to dismiss John Wright, four, caught by Davies on the extra cover boundary and then Doug Marillier for 31 when Adam Cotton held a catch at long-on. Jimmy Adams bowled Adam Sharrocks for 13 and Ian Palmer claimed the wicket of Andrew Clough, 18, when Stephen Twist at mid-wicket took a catch but seasoned campaigners Rob Clark, 23 not out, and Michael Clinning, 17 before being run out, boosted the Fleetwood total. And with Steve Hill four not out the innings closed at 88-8.
Adams was the most economical bowler with 1-13 from his three overs while Jackson was the most successful with 2-27 from two overs. Davies had 1-20 and Palmer 1-28 with Twist 0-12 and Adam Cotton 0-15 went wicketless in their two overs each.
The St Annes reply began far too slowly for this type of cricket and there were very soon behind the required rate and with few overs in which to catch up, they were doomed to defeat from early in the innings. Adam Cotton, the one man who could have made a difference, went early when he skied to mid-wicket where Whalley took the catch off Clinning whose three overs earned him 2-9. Adrian Darlington was caught by Wright at backward point off Clough for six, Adams, having hit one huge six into the adjacent rugby ground, holed out to Clark at backward square leg for 13 and youngsters Hartley, one, and Paul Williams, two, were sacrificed in the chase for quick runs. Davies fell to a superb boundary catch by Clinning off Hill for one and although Jackson, 11, and Richard Thomas, 10, gave good support to Twist, there was never a chance of victory.
Twist finished on 41 not out made from 29 balls with one six and five fours and Palmer was one not out when the overs ran out at 88-8 that meant defeat by 32 runs. Still to play are the games against Preston, which is scheduled for next Tuesday at Vernon Road, and the rain-ruined game against Blackpool that needs rearranging.
