Match Report
In spite of a stirring batting performance and an excellent start in the field, St Annes were left waiting for their first win of the season as Anchorsholme steamrollered them in the last hour of play.
Although the openers went cheaply, a tremendous recovery was staged first by Nigel Connolly (31) and then by Mick Renshaw who rolled back the years with a matchless 51 including eight boundaries. He farmed the bowling with great intelligence and commitment until he was stumped near the end and it was left to some hefty blows from skipper Tim Rawstron to ensure that maximum batting points were gained.
Anchorsholme were in obvious trouble at 41-4 and an hour left to bat- thanks to a great-hearted stint of ten overs from Tom Heap for 4-28. 16 year old Chris Cairns bowled really well for little reward. However, they launched an astonishing assault which the other bowlers could not contain and standards sadly slipped in the field. St Annes had to play the whole innings with ten men and the last several overs with nine but it was a match they should surely have won.
