The Fylde League Division One
3RD TEAM REPORT It is pleasing to report another good year for the team. Whilst we have not been able to retain the League title, we have finished as Runners Up and this is a credit to all the players involved, as it is the first time we have achieved this position and will be winners of the Newton Trophy.
This season 29 different players have been used and many of the younger players have made their Fylde League Div. 1 debuts. All have performed creditably and make the future encouraging, I am sure that many of these players who are under 15 will push for regular places next season.
One of the highlight victories of the season was a win over the League Champions, Boston at Fleetwood in June.St Annes on a difficult wicket made only 87 for 7 in 45 overs and then bowled out Boston for 77 with some great catches held.
On the batting front Mike Hartley was the top run scorer with 533 runs at an average of 33.31. He started the season with a 51 in the opening game and finished with a 40 in his last innings. During the season he scored his runs consistently. His 98 against Baxi on the 9th June was a pleasure for all who watched.
Also Stephen Wright has scored 307 runs, always in a positive manner, Tim Bernstein 292. Many others have played match-winning innings including Paul Williams, Tom Bolus, Nigel Bernstein and Simon Owen.
The mainstay of the bowling has been skipper Graham Tindall who has taken 63 wickets at 11 each, bowling 307 overs at a rate of runs against of only 2.25 per over. He has taken 5 wickets or more in an innings 7 times in 16 matches. Also on the 15th July against Fleetwood, in the twilight of his career he achieved his first senior league hat trick. Support came from Stephen Wright 29 wickets, Andy Taylor 21 wickets and Paul Wilks 14 wickets. These players all improved on last season with the number of wickets taken, which included many match winning performances.
However the main improvement seen this season has been in the fielding both in catches held and ground fielding. It is difficult to single out individuals as at one time or another everyone played their part. But special mention must be given to Stephen Wright with 15 catches and to Alex Taylor whose fielding during the season has been nothing short of brilliant.
A great season for many individuals, but mainly for the team, who have always played the game in a positive manner and have worked for one another throughout the season.
