The Northern Premier League Division One

1ST TEAM REPORT
By Skipper Russ Bradley

A largely disappointing season for the first team. although the long term future of St. Annes has I feel again been enhanced. Obviously our league position of sixth is not what we wanted or what the team is capable of achieving, but you finish where you deserve to. The main problem was consisitency, which is required if you are to win a league. We played well in some games and poorly in others and our league position reflects this.

On the positive side though a few of the clubs younger players have had the opportunity to play first team cricket. For all of the season we have played with six or seven players under the age of 21 - how many other clubs could boast the same? These lads have gained good experience and have all put in good individual performances and are developing into more mature cricketers. Let's hope that they all remain with the club. I'm sure their performances will be even better next year. I did read with interest the spectators report that appeared on the website recently. It suggested that youngsters are ignored or starved of opportunity at St. Annes. I hope my previous comments regarding the first team and the number of youngsters who have played and performed in the second team put this argument to rest.

This year also proved to be the last for Dave Callaghan as our professional. Dave as a player and a person has done so much for St. Annes that may go unnoticed for a while, but the long term benefits will be realised. I'm sure that everyone will join me in thanking Dave for his contributions on and off the field, it has been a pleasure to play along side him and to be able to call him a friend. Dave and all his family will be missed by St. Annes CC.

Let's look forward to success in the year 2002 and I wish all players in all teams the best of luck. In particular our new professional and captain, whoever they may turn out to be. I have been proud to be the club captain of St. Annes and I know the future of St. Annes Cricket Club is a bright one.
