Match Report
This was the first cup final appearance for St. Annes fourths and their long serving captain Tim Rawstron in twenty one years and although the losing margin was pretty comprehensive, the spirited mixture of young and not-so-young worked hard and came out with much credit.
Postal were put under early pressure from a fierce early spell from Nigel Connolly and Paul McCabe but this could not be regularly sustained as a mixture of classic and unconventional batting gave them a good edge on a big playing area. St. Annes raced around in desperate efforts to stem the flow and their fielding efforts deserved better reward; catches from Paul Wilks and Paul McCabe were outstanding. Too often though, the bowling was loose and was punished, but Tom Heap turned in another brave effort shrugging off injury to return eight tight overs.
The batting reply was always behind the clock as the pitch noticeably slowed and Derek Dearden had to temporarily retire after being knocked unconscious by a careless close-range throw. Paul McCabe worked hard for 27 and Connolly and John Dougall both reached 16. David Hartley swung the bat at the end for 10 not out.
A brave effort and they will try to go one better next year.
